Academic and Peer Support

Small group quarterly seminars provide critical skills to create a strong application, prepare for exams, and succeed in interviews. Shoreline Community College students have successfully entered competitive graduate health professional programs by demonstrating a strong academic record and a strong application portfolio.

One- and Two-Credit Seminars

Open to Post-Bacc students regardless of previous enrollment at Shoreline. Three or four seminars are offered each quarter.

• Science 270 Intro to Social Determinants in Health (2 credits)
  Discussions, activities and readings to understand the social factors that impact someone's ability to receive healthcare and how to help. Students will learn about geographic, economic and demographic barriers. A strong focus will be on finding and navigating community resources and best practices to support patients and families. Prerequisite: Bachelor Degree or permission of instructor. Mandatory P/NC grading. 
• Science 271 and 272 Topics in Health Care (1 or 2 credits)
  This course focuses on one or more topics important to health care in the United States or the world. Prerequisite: Bachelor's degree or instructor permission. Mandatory P/NC grading. 
• Science 284 Preparing for Graduate Health Professions 1 (1 credit) 
  This is a first seminar for Post-Baccalaureate students preparing for graduate-level health professions, such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, etc. Topics include: admissions process, academic preparation, health professional roles, social determinants of health. Students create a personal plan. Prerequisite: Bachelor's Degree and instructor permission. Mandatory P/NC grading. 
• Science 285 Preparing for Graduate Health Professions 2 (1 credit) 
  Second of two-part seminar for Post-Baccalaureate students preparing for graduate-level health professions, such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, etc. Focus: preparing for admissions process, exposure to diverse aspects of medicine, professionalism, and strengthening qualifications. Prerequisite: SCI 284; or Bachelor Degree and instructor permission. 
• Science 286 Applying to Graduate Health Professional Schools (1 credit)
  This seminar is for Post-Baccalaureate students getting ready to apply to graduate-level health professional schools. Topics included are: choosing schools, writing about work and activities, writing an effective personal statement, planning letters of evaluation, and preparing for the interview. Prerequisite: SCI 284 or SCI 285; or Bachelor Degree and instructor permission. Mandatory P/NC grading. 
• Science 287 Critical Reading Analysis for MCAT, GRE (1 credit)
  This seminar is for students preparing for the MCAT, GRE or other advanced level test. The course focuses on preparation for the MCAT Critical Analysis and Reading Skills section and the GRE Verbal Reasoning section. Included are test format, free and low cost resources, critical reasoning skills, and test strategies. Mandatory P/NC grading. 
• Science 288 MCAT Preparation and the Medical School Application (1 credit)
  This seminar is for students preparing for medical school. The focus of this course is on the MCAT and the application process. Topics: MCAT content learning strategies, free and low cost resources, needs assessment, preparation plan development, medical school admission, school selection, and peer and instructor support. Mandatory P/NC grading. 
• Science 289 MCAT Test Practice and Strategies (1 credit)
  This seminar is for students preparing for the MCAT. The seminar focuses on test taking practice, needs assessment, test and preparation strategies, peer and instructor support. Mandatory P/NC grading. 
• SCI 290 Internship at Seattle Children’s Hospital (1 credit)
  Students connect families to community resources by interning with the Community Resource Team at Seattle Children's Hospital. Work includes talking with families, emailing clinical teams, documenting and follow up. Each student will contribute written material to the resource manual. Excellent attendance is required. Prerequisite: SCI 270 with Pass and instructor permission. Mandatory P/NC grading.
